When Nothing Is Working, Stop Trying Harder

One of the questions I hear most often from parents is surprisingly simple:

"What should I do?"

Sometimes it's asked through tears.

Sometimes it's whispered after months, or years, of trying everything.

Sometimes it sounds like...

"Nothing is working anymore."

If you've ever felt that way, you're not alone.

In fact, after more than 30 years working with parents, teens, young adults, and families, I've learned something that might surprise you.

When families feel stuck, they usually don't need more information.

They don't need another list of parenting tips.

They don't need someone telling them to be more patient, more consistent, or more understanding.

What they need is clarity.

We Live in a World Full of Advice

Scroll social media for five minutes and you'll find endless parenting advice.

One expert tells you to set firmer boundaries.

Another tells you to loosen them.

Someone says consequences.

Someone else says connection.

No wonder parents feel overwhelmed.

The problem isn't a lack of information.

The problem is trying to figure out which advice fits your family right now.

One Step Is Better Than Twenty Ideas

Years ago, a young coaching client asked me a question I'll never forget.

"What do you do to stay healthy and balanced?"

I told her I picture my life like a wellness wheel.

I don't try to perfect every area at once.

Instead, I ask myself:

"What's one thing I can do today to move forward?"

Sometimes it's taking a walk.

Sometimes it's calling a friend.

Sometimes it's getting to bed earlier.

Sometimes it's making one healthier meal.

One small step.

That's all.

Months later, a close friend sent me that clip from Instagram.

She wrote,

"Your words were exactly what I needed today."

It reminded me that this isn't just true for wellness.

It's true for parenting.

Parents Don't Need More Pressure

When things aren't going well at home, our instinct is often to work harder.

Read another book.

Listen to another podcast.

Search for another strategy.

But trying harder isn't always what moves us forward.

Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is pause long enough to ask:

Where do I need to begin?

Is it communication?

Is it my relationship with my child?

Is it their mental health?

Is it my own well-being?

Is it the way we've been responding to each other?

Until we know where to focus, every new parenting tip simply becomes one more thing to try.

Why I Created the Move FORWARD Reflection

That's exactly why I created the Move FORWARD Reflection.

Not because families need more advice.

Because they need a place to pause.

To reflect.

To identify the area that needs the most attention.

And then...

To choose one meaningful step.

Because that's what I've seen work over and over again.

Not perfect parents.

Not perfect plans.

Just one meaningful step.

Then another.

Then another.

Your Next Step

If you're feeling stuck today, here's my invitation.

Stop trying to solve everything.

Instead, ask yourself:

What's one meaningful step I can take today that would move me—or my family—forward?

Because lasting change rarely happens all at once.

It begins with the first step.

And that first step leads to the next.

And then the next.

That's how families move FORWARD.
